Mahjong is a tile-based game that was developed in China during the Qing dynasty and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century. It is commonly played by four players (with some three-player variations found in Japan, South Koreaand Southeast Asia). The game and its regional variants are widely played throughout Eastern and South Eastern Asia and have become popular in Western countries too. The game has also been adapted into a widespread online entertainment.[1][2][3][4] Similar to the Western card game rummy, Mahjong is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. The 2018 blockbuster film, Crazy Rich Asians, can be credited with the latest resurgence in the classic tile game, once the purview of retired senior citizens in Boca Raton. Brought to the US about 1920, the game has gone through cycles of popularity. But thanks to the film and the Instagram’s of Julia Roberts and Sarah Jessica Parker, who both recently took up the game, it is trending again!
